HUNDREDS OF RESIDENTS CALL FOR MIDHURST TO BE INCLUDED IN THE NATIONAL PARK

On Saturday 8 September over three hundred people signed a petition calling for Midhurst, Petworth and the rest of the western Weald to be included within the boundary of the South Downs National Park.

In a matter of just a couple of hours, hundreds of people had signed the petition, often queuing two or three deep to make their views known.

The stall was organized by the South Downs Society, supported by the Youth Hostels Association and other members of the South Downs Campaign.

Jacquetta Fewster, of the South Downs Society, said “I was delighted by the support shown for the protection of Midhurst, Petworth and the western Weald.  This is such a special area which deserves to be part of our National Park.”

She added: “This level of support came as no surprise.  The proposed National Park has long included the western Weald within its boundaries and has always enjoyed huge public support.  Most recently, the BBC Politics Show found that the vast majority of people, over 95%, supported the National Park.”

“Anyone wishing to support the campaign is urged to sign the online petition to the prime minister at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/western-weald, or telephone the South Downs Society on 01798 875073.”
