The South Downs Society is extremely disappointed that John Prescott has granted planning permission for a Football Stadium at Falmer on the edge of Brighton.
'Its a sad day for Sussex and the emerging South Downs National Park" says Graham Fuller, spokesman for the South Downs Society'.
'The proposed stadium will be a massive and highly conspicuous intrusion into the South Downs that will be wholly out of scale with its surroundings. The noise and excitement of professional football will be wholly incompatible with the peace and tranquillity found in this part of the Downs'.

FALMER FOOTBALL STADIUM
The Society is extremely disappointed that John Prescott has granted planning permission for Brighton and Hove Albion's proposed new Footabll Stadium at Falmer, on the edge of Brighton. The site is within the Sussex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and right on the boundary of the proposed National Park. The landscape and scenic beauty of such areas is entitled to the highest possible degree of protection, but permission has nevertheless been granted for a massive structure that will be wholly out of scale with its surroundings and visible from a wide range of vantage points. The Inspector who conducted the main public Inquiry concluded that there were overwhelming planning objections to the proposed development, and the Inspector examining the proposed Local Plan reached a similar conclusion.
